What would be the minimum size UPS/Surge Protector that one should use for a Shark Slimline?

I have a CNC Shark and I recently purchased a Slimline. My question is; Will the controller software I have on my laptop allow for two different controllers and touchplates?

What Joules rating would you recommend for a surge protector to plug the controller box into, or does it matter what the rating is? I see protectors that are rated from 300 joules to over 4000 joules. Is it just the old "bigger is better" theory?

It hasn't happened to either of the two Sharks I oversee, but one has popped a fuse twice so far. My thoughts include: Check the fuse. It is a slide-out tray under the power plug jack.
