Re: Shark Piranha vs Piranha FX
The Porter Cable 73xx routers are not the same as the Dewalt 611. The one that's pretty similar to the Dewalt 611 is the Porter Cable 450. We looked at the 73xx router a while back and most of them we saw had poor runout in the router itself. Not trying to talk anyone into anything, just wanted to c...

Re: sppeds and feeds - sorry
Feeds and speeds are a complicated issue that involve more than just chip loads. Assuming ideal materials, tools, and machines you would determine your max RPM then use that to figure out your feed rates. RPM -Metal For metal and some composites this is easy using a SFM (surface feet per minute) num...

Re: COLLET BROKE, DOES ANYONE KNOWS WHY?
Wish I could have responded to this ealier but hopefully this is still useful. The colt collets have always been brittle. However, the main issue was probably switching to the other router. The new colts use a different armature and the taper of the router bore is not as long. This causes the collet...

Re: Spindle For Shark Available
I can answer at least one of those questions. ER11 collets only go up to 1/4" (ER11 collets are 11mm at the face 11mm=.433").
I would also be curious if they are specing a TIR on it.

Re: Inlay Basics
Just wanted to jump in here and say NEVER mic a carbide tool. Even if you can't see it you will very possibly damage the tool. Attached is a picture of a 0.0280" tool we had a customer return to us after they "measured" it. Not only is the tool damaged but you can't always get a good idea of the dia...

Re: Burning Wood!
Endmills rely on the chips being cut to remove heat from the tool. So the simple answer is lower your RPM, increase your feedrate, take a shallower pass, and/or use a cutter with less flutes. A dull bit will make this worse. You may still run into an issue with some code as when you change direction...

Re: Burning Wood!
The chips that are removed from the material as it cuts carry heat away from the bit. If the chips are too small it won't carry enough heat away to keep it from burning. You can solve this a number of ways. Lower your RPM, increase your feed, or use a tool with fewer flutes. All these will increase ...

Re: Engraving brass
Usually the easiest thing to do is mount a spoil piece to your machine. Then pocket out a section the size of your brass piece. Be sure to pocket out your corners too (dog bone). Then the bottom of your pocket will be true to your router (no shimming or measuring required). You should then be able t...

Re: Bit slip
Hey Doug, Glad you got everything working. We all started as rookies so I think we all know how it feels. I know personally there have been a few times when I've learned that I don't understand nearly as much as I thought I did about physics (sometimes I learn via high speed flying wood :o ). I wasn...
