Re: Been away awhile...
Thanks Basecircle. could you elaborate a little on what you are saying that you just seal everything first? I understand the contact paper process, but not the latter, thanks, Mike Sure -- I seal everything with lacquer. If it's a portrait I sand it to finish grit and put two good coats of...

Re: Been away awhile...
Hi Mark - sorry your question has gone unanswered for so long. I rarely log in anymore except to read late at night. I don't use ConTac paper anymore and haven't in a long time - probably since this thread originally started. I've found better ways to paint since then. But to answer your question, y...

Re: Bamboo plywood
Kitty -- these pieces I posted last year are a sort of bamboo plywood but made with bamboo layers, not wood layers (if that makes sense). These carved very easily and cleanly and took the ink like a charm but I can't get them anymore. As for flooring - I wouldn't cut flooring due to the finish some ...

Re: First 3d carve
Hey David -- thought about you a couple times this past week when I planed out an old piece of wild cherry and found the exact grain shown in your photos.
How 'bout that.

Re: Selling Shark Pro with entire shop.
That's a heck of a deal for anyone with the cash!
Hope someone jumps on it and gets you into your bass boat.
I've enjoyed reading you over the past couple of years milo -- good luck on the water.
That's a choice I wouldn't want to be faced with... fishing or my shop.

Re: Butterfly engraved lighter
Hey - this is cool!
We did some engraving on a Zippo once - nothing as intricate as your butterfly though.
Used an old 60º vbit and set the depth at .01 and let it go. It cut right through the plating and into the soft brass below.

Re: First 3d carve
Very nice cut. I like those deep cut 3D even though I quit doing 3D a year ago.
But are you sure that's cherry?
Looks like mahogany to me.

Re: Its ARRIVED! And I am already confused
Like tonydude, I prefer cherry, walnut, birch and maple (I steer totally clear of oak) but have used some poplar on occasion. When I do I always shoot a coat of lacquer first and let it dry before carving - it cuts a lot cleaner that way. But your photo doesn't look like the problem is with the popl...

lol
Now I get it... "nodes on the backside" meaning a single line vector rather than a square.
duh

Re: Simple Cuts for You all...
I also opened your file and did a simple profile outside/right with a .25 endmill. In the 3D view I double clicked the cutouts to delete them from the preview so you see this. gun rack2.jpg I don't know why it won't generate a toolpath for you though. Also, you can save previews like this: preview i...
