Tilling question

I'm pushing the envelope (for me anyway) to do a long 3d model (53 inches) on my shark. I was thinking of using the overlap to help with the transition from one tile to the next. My question is, is the overlap on both sides of the tile or just on the end. I'm assuming I start the second tile at the end of the specific length of the first tile but if the overlap is on both ends I have aproblem unless I allow for that on positioning my material. I hope I have explained enough to get a response. I think I know the answer but I don't want to ruin a nice board confirming. Thanks.
