I am considering buying a Shark but have no idea how it works to create 3D carvings. I am interested in making scale model molds of real-world rock outcroppings and stone culverts of bridges. Is there a way to take pictures, scale them to 1/4" to the foot, and convert them to files that can drive a Shark?

Re: How to create 3D carvings
You will need to buy aspire to make a3D model. Look at the training videos for aspire. http://support.vectric.com/training-material also download the demo to see if that is what you want. http://www.vectric.com/downloads/trial-software.html

Re: How to create 3D carvings
Turning a photo into a 3D carving will take something more than Aspire.
Re: How to create 3D carvings
Actually its not that difficult to go photo to carving wirh Aspire. There is an excellent tutorial that is available with Aspire. I've done it quite a bit and have been pleased with the results.
Re: How to create 3D carvings
I understand 4D's thinking, but agree with Bill in the end. My understanding also is that all or most of the models sold by Vector Art 3D are created using Aspire as well. Over the years I've met several folks who use Aspire for all aspects of their 3D model creation. I've also met folks who have a toolset - 2-4 different modeling packages for various modeling tasks and then the output ends up in Aspire.
I believe that several of the videos created during recent user conferences are available from the Vectric site and will give you a sense of this as well.
As everyone has stated, to create a 'new' 3D model, you will need Aspire. You can't create a 'new' 3D model using VCarve. The good news is that before you buy, you can download a fully functional trial copy, and go through the training material that is available from the Vectric site, and determine if you can in fact create the model/project you are interested in. It does take some time in learning how to use VCarve and Aspire before you can start getting a sense of this. And it may take more time to hone your skills - but in the end I think you'll be surprised at how straight forward this process is.

Re: How to create 3D carvings
Lots of 3d printing apps have been released recently which convert photos to 3d.rrman wrote:I am considering buying a Shark but have no idea how it works to create 3D carvings. Photoshop can do it and convert to 3d printable format.
I have seen a few listed here http://www.3ders.org//
Just skim back through to find them. Because a number use similar formats to CNC work the end product may need converting just tweaking.
You could repost your question at CNC zone, may be a simpler way or program.
