Lubrication On Y Axis

Post by Shipfitter »

Any tips or tricks on lubricating the Y axis on the Shark HD? I can't get my mitts in there deep enough to be able to put lube onto the travel screw under that table. Eventually I will have to drill some tiny holes into the table in order to be able to drop lube onto that screw if I cannot find another remedy.
I figured that I would try to pull some PM on the machine during this Xmas holiday. For this is the first time in 3 months the machine has gone longer than a day without cutting. (Letting er cool off) :D

Happy Holidays everyone

On my old Shark Pro (MDF top) I just remove (unscrew) the top to see the Y screw. Not sure how practical it is to take off the T-Slot top.

I remove one of the aluminum center slats. This is easy for me to do since I removed the plastic end support and replaced with an aluminum square. If you still have the original plastic slat, you loosen the nuts, then you may have to pry up until you can slide the slat off.

I made a couple of small straws and put them together, they fit in to the Lub Spray can and go all the way to the jack screw.... no need to pull the top off

I formed a shepherd's crook out of a scrap bracket I had, screwed it on the end of a scrap stick, and rubber band a piece of rag to it. Wet the rag, hold the crook on the lead screw - jog back and forth... Pretty high tech.

I use a light grease on my Y axis (as it stays very dust free under the table).
You can use a toothbrush on the end of a stick to clean the lead-screw from the side while moving the y slowly.
That setup is also good for applying the lubricant

If you use a spray lubricant you can get a small hose section to carry it to the lead-screw and nut from the side.

Do a search for 'extendalube'. It will yield a package of three long straws. Reaches the Y axis very well for application of the lubricant. Someone had this solution in a prior posting.
