Engraving Wood preference?

Post by tonybell9699 »

Hi!

I have an order for a sign, but it requires very detailed engravings. Usually I take poplar (easy to get here) finish both sides and then engrave. 99% of the time it looks really good. I can not seem to get the image engraved well enough, so it is probably the wood (Poplar fuzzies). What wood do you use?

I am using a 30 deg v bitt. depth .02.

Thanks in advance, I am running out of scrap wood to practice on

I make awards for the Association that I work for and I use hard maple. Typically I use a 30 degree bit to V carve. The maple does great keeping the details of all the lettering and no fuzzing issues.

Maple, Maple, Maple. Absolutely my favourite. Next would be Cherry for me. Walnut takes wonderful detail, but is really hard to see because it is so dark.

Does anyone have a good supply source for 6/4 walnut in 12 in widths?
