Branding iron

Post by gpeck »

Has anyone carved a small branding iron on the shark? If there has, what metal and what bit did you use? Thanks for any info. Gene

What will you be branding with it? A cow? A piece of wood? A ROUND piece of wood? Typically you'd want to use a steel or wrought iron, but brass and aluminum should work just fine....depending on the application.

How big are we talking of a brand? Do you have a depth that you intend to press the brand into the material? And, how do you want to heat the iron?

Overall, a lot depends on how tall that raised burning part needs to be above the backing plate so that the hot plate does not contact the material. How you would carve/machine the branding iron will be determined in large part by that.
