Shark pro HD — probing a 4" deep 3d object

Post by adowty »

Hello,

This message is for anyone who ever did 2 sided cnc probing and cutting.

I am awaiting the delivery of my shark pro hd. (the one with the 7" z axis).
I have an object I want to probe using the touch probe.
I am pouring over the message board and cut3d website trying to investigate what hurdles I may encounter.

One thing that comes up for me is this:
I can see that the probe itself less than 4 inches long. I am wondering what happens when the probe gets to the edge of a 4 inch deep object.
The probe will suddenly drop to 4 inches deeper than the last touch. I'm guessing it will hit the collet (or the base of the probe).
Can the machine tell that the collet has bumped into something?
Will it register as a touch and move on — or will it get stuck?

I will likely run into the same issue when cutting.
The answer to that seems to be to have a long bit for the outside perimeter.
...or to create a complex cut plane (that isn't a straight plane) using multiple tabs of varying heights.

Can't wait to hear back.

Andy

Deep cuts like you describe are challenging and difficult. Longer bits tend to flex or break (if you can find them). Most of us doing that kind of work usually slice the model and do it in to parts. Can't answer the probe issue. you might want to try a bit extender. But be careful You can break the probe.

Will you be cutting sign foam?
I've not tried that much of a scan (range) most of what I've done is 1-1-1/2" max.
You might best call Nextwave Automation and ask direct.

Thanks for your replies guys.

Here is a link to my hand carved instruments:

(each picture has it's own slideshow)

I know that while the probe is on the surface of the object it will not be in danger of running out of length, (likewise with the bit)
I will be cutting hardwood, so I know i will have to adjust to slow speeds with many shallow cuts. (but I think the PorterCable can do 1/8" cuts right?)
The concern I'm having is for the edges.

Check out this guy:

He's using a bigger nicer machine, but the z axis on the shark pro hd should accommodate my depth plus a 3/4" plywood jig.

What I'm thinking of now is to build an elaborate terrace around the object allowing the probe to step down from the high places.
I wonder what kind of material I could build it out of?
I thought about legos, wood blocks.

I was thinking about half burying the object in standard clay or plaster.
...or the pebbles they use for aquariums.

Anyway, the last thing will be to connect the front and back scans in autoCAD.
I figure I should be able to intersect-booleen them together.

Thanks again.

Andy
