Pretty much any standard graphic format will work, jpeg, bitmap, gif, tiff.

Keep in mind that the cleaner the graphics and the higher the resolution, the cleaner that it will trace and then cut. Sometime you can go in and edit the nodes to clean up a few irregular items but it will rarely cut nicely (or smoothly) if it is ragged. Example above is what you want to strive to find... something clean and sharp. There are tons of good graphics on the internet.
