It actually has been made into a smaller clock, but not a mantel height. The distance from the pivot to the pendulum regulates it's speed. That distance ( as is is now) is around 4ft if memory serves me correctly. That said, the gyrating motion I assume could be altered by using a different thickness spring thus altering it's period, so with some tinkering, staring and swearing, and some more tinkering I'm pretty sure it could be adjusted. I would start with the recommended spring thickness and go thinner, thinking it would have less torque thus spinning slower to shorten the period thus shortening the spring. With a little math and time you probably could get it to work :)

Do you think ceiling fan turbulence would affect its accuracy significantly?

The design can indeed be altered to be a mantel clock. Clayton has an example of that on his web site: http://www.lisaboyer.com/Claytonsite/fo ... llator.htm. Clayton's plans don't cover the mantel version, but it's certainly viable.

I wouldn't expect ceiling fan turbulence to significantly affect the clock's running. It'll probably affect the accuracy somewhat, but this design is inherently somewhat inaccurate anyway, so making it slightly worse shouldn't worry you.

Have to agree with K on this one. As with any wooden mechanical movement it will inherently not be "atomic clock" accurate. That said if it's function is affected the a few minutes a day, they are a few minutes a day off anyway :) As with any of these clocks, for me anyway, I wouldn't fuss over 1-3 minutes fast or slow as its more to display thier mechanical movements and the beauty of the design.

I kind of think of them this way.....

It's a wondrous machine. ..........that happens to tell time :)

IDBD, there are several different designs being floated in this thread. Most of them are for sale here:

Welcome to the forum IDBD. If you decide to move forward with any of the plans you view on Claytons site keep us posted! There's a ton of information available and we are here to help. Clock building takes a bit of patience but I can vouch that all of Claytons designs work ( many on the Web don't ). And as always, send some pics, we would love to see it!

While window shopping in YouTube, I came across these interesting videos about the Simplicity Clock. I realize that we, in this forum, are not the only ones making these clocks, but I couldn't but think, just maybe these were made by one of you.

Then there is this one.
