Flat bottom smooth pocket

Post by HeartFelt Rustics »

I need some help. I am wanting to make a sign where the background is cut away
with the letters protruding out from background. The problem I am
having is my background is perfectly smooth and flat but you can see lines
where the bit traveled. How can I achieve a smooth background without seeing these
lines? I am using a .25" up cut end mill. Thanks guys

There are several things that can cause such lines. Can you post a picture of what you're seeing?

Rando,

Here is a pic. The board is stained with wood stain. I am
happy with how smooth it is but not with the look. Thank you

You could try rastering with the grain instead of against the grain. It will then not be so noticeable. Especially after a little light sanding.

Is this something similar to what you are trying to accomplish??? Of course this is performed in Premium (no knots) Pine!

Yes exactly. I am using Select Pine. Not the lower quality common board pine

okay,

First you would want to raster with the grain instead of against the grain as I posted earlier. Second have you watched Vetric's video on TEXT on TEXT tutorial??

If you look real close in the area circled you will see tool bit marks. There are a couple on this project and it is only due to the size of the bit not being able to get in between the letters. I could have gone back with a smaller bit but it was so minor that I left them. Besides leaving somethings alone is better than attempting and possibly destroying entire project!
