router rpms

Post by sharkie »

As noted in earlier post, I have had my Pro for almost a year and love it. I have gone through 2 Bosch routers though and have spent the time to repair them so I have spares all the time. Was wondering though, what rpms or more specifically what number setting everyone uses for specific materials. I have been carving and cutting red oak 90% of the time, and have been using the top speed, #6 all the time. (except when I do any foam or really soft stuff). I am now wondering if that caused my wearing out routers or if it is just the adjustable switch. Should I use a mid rpm for the oak? Thanks in advance. By the way, I mostly use the v bits, and ogee to do borders before the end mill cut off.

Dennis
when running my router I start about 2 and if I hear any laboring of the router
I will turn it up a bit. Very seldom do I ever use number 6
but I also keep spares around for the just in case 8-)

Thanks Ken, is that with hardwoods like oak, and would you increase for bits like ogees that are taking more meat off? (of course in layers)

Most of what I do is hard woods
if the router is laboring then turn it up some
the wider the cut the less depth or you will have burning
especially at a high rate of speed

High RPMs slow cut rate, I work with ipe and Brazilian cherry alot and still have my 1st router. It's only been a few months but I cut 2-3 items every day.
Let's revisit the whole "Hope I die before I get old" Thing.
