cutting spiral offset

Post by coq »

Hello

I am just starting to use the 4th axis. I have rounded a piece and am experimenting with the spiral and fluting gadget usinf vcarve 8.0. the problem i am having is I set the cut to start 1 inch from the end of the piece, but it starts cutting at the offset position which is the end of the workpiece. it doen't add the 1 inch on.

i touched the front and rear settings. set the offset in preferences to 1.25 inches. move to offset then download the g code and run. the bit moves to center but is off by the 1 inch. then starts cutting

what am i doing wrong

thanks
keith

Keith
First can you put up the file you are trying to run?
Second, In your file the x-y position is the offset on your 4th axis, if you want the cutting to start 1" past the offset you have to have your start spiral 1" over from the x-y position.
If you can't fix in your file make your offset in preferences 2.25"
don't forget to change back your preferences back when you are done.
Hope this helps.

spiral.crv
varve 8.0 file for simple spiral
(20.5 KiB) Downloaded 322 times
Profile 1.tap
gcode for test spiral
(1.31 KiB) Downloaded 342 times
Thanks Rick I was thinking I could adjust the offset to get the cut done like you said.

I am just confused on why the gcode did not get the 1 inch from the edge to start cutting. This is all new
and I was thinking the offset in the controller should account for where the edge of the material should be
then the cutting should start 1 inch in like the design in Vcarve,

I am very new to this and appreciate the help and suggestions.

I think I got it figured out.

I was setting the zero for XY in the middle of the design. When I changed it to the corner
it cut like I expected.

Thanks
