Can you make...Wavy barrel staves candle holders

Postby BillK » Sat Apr 28, 2018 7:39 pm

Greetings. Every once in a while I get the I saw this on ....can you make it?

This was a picture of old wine barrel staves one up one down with cut outs to hold tea candles.

As I didn’t have any wine barrels laying around I went to Home Depot and bought a doug fir 4x4. Did the calculations on how big a radius would fit in a 3.5 x 30” window, avoided as many knots as I could and cut two of these out on my band saw.

I cleaned them up mostly with a spoke shave and a little with a rasp.

Then it came to how do I add five indents for the candles? Tried a couple on the scrap with a chisel and gouge, forsner bit and nothing looked good. So on to aspire to create a beautiful indent. Now how do I cut this beast in my shark?

Pictures are worth 1000 words. Save the waste pieces ‘til the job is done.
