One Happy Daughter!

Post by Mick86 »

I'd had enough of toys everywhere so made this Toy box for my daughter.
She likes it and so does my wife so brownie points all round.
Front panel is 700x400x35.
roughed out with 1/4 spiril and finish pass with 1/8 tapered spiril.
10.5hr total cut time.
I stained the box with a home blend of shellac and dyes.
Artists water colours on the carvings and then sprayed the whole thing with Poly.
I think it came up pretty good.

Thanks guys for the comments.

The timber is magnolia. Never used it before, but picked up a cube of it cheap.
It went under water in the Brisbane floods last year, and cabinet shop went out of business.
It a very bland timber but machines well and very stable. but needs some stain to give it a bit of life.

Very nice. Where did you get the 3d carving design from. Was it done in Vcarve? Did u do the box joints by hand? Looks great. Almost looks like its back lit. Really stands out well. Good job with the whole thing. Even better if its made from savage timber from a piece of Australian history. Those floods were amazing. I remember seeing it on the news and couldn't believe how fast the water went through the towns like a tital wave.

The design was done in aspire from 31 seperate models found all over the web, took me a few weeks to find them all and the play with the modeling. The corner joints are dovetails done on a leigh jig. I am well pleased with the final result, even more so after a mate talked me into the water colour. I am no much of the painting type but it did pull the whole thing together and give it some pop.
