Dumpster Diving project

Post by Keith Hodges »

While at my local Mr. Plastic to pick up some acrylic, I do as I always do, check his dumpster for cutoffs, that he gladly lets me have. Found quite a few different types of plastic that I plan on trying. One, a dark acrylic, caught my eye, so thought I'd give it a try. I like having different colors for these butterfly's, since I don't light them with LED's. Pretty cool for a freebee.

Keith,

Those are nice. What bit are you using on these? One of these days I have to try some acrylic.

Hi Tony. For the design I used a 90 v bit. The material is only 1/8 inch thick, and some of the design wouldn't allow a 1/4 inch end mill for a cut out profile, so I just used a 1/8 ball nose to cut it out. Much thinner cut, like this example, between the antenna and the base of the wing, just not enough space for the 1/4" bit.

About 6" x 6". Of course, as any, you can make any size. I thought these would be nice on a what not shelf, or in my wife's case, her dressing table.

When gluing acrylic like your stand what glue is best.

Tim, its not a glue. You sort of weld the pieces together. I Googled welding acrylic, or something similar and found a video, utube I believe. The product they used is Weldon 4. Put the two edges together, apply a drop and hold for a minute or so. It's clear, and if you make a mess, just let it evaporate. If you wipe it up its supposed to distort the surface.

Do you make the stands too?
Thinking this might be something that would sell at Trade Days or craft fairs.

Yes, I just cut the parts out of the left over scrap on my bandsaw, and sand for smoothness. Just a rectangle and a circle, welded together. This cost me nothing but about 15 minutes of my time. The acrylic is 1/8 inch thick.
