Chamfereed Edges On Holes

Post by McBuster »

Thought I would add some ideas for Chamferring holes. I might imagine the same would hold true for an edge.

1) If the Angled Bit is wide enough, one might just bore the hole out a little and go straight into the existing hole and produce a Chamfer. What you might risk, is some chattering if there is any resistance.

2) We could use Profile and trace the circle described by the hole itself. The risk is, if the board is slightly off center from the hole to the Chamfer, there will be a flat ledge for part of it and, the Chamfer will visibly be off center.

3) We could describe a smaller circle in the larger one and use Profile to trace On the line. This would result in a very nice Chamfer but the the tool may not be effective at such a small tool diameter being used.

4) Make the inscribed circle much smaller, let the bit descend further down and a much larger face of the tool will be used. This also has an advantage that the speed of the tool face is much faster than before.

Using a smaller circle is useful for the reasons in #4. However, there is an optimum, ie: making the circle 1/16" in a 1" hole simple would not work.

you could set the amount you want the chamfer out and use that as a offset. then use a vee bit and set the depth.
