Wedding gift box

Post by BillK »

Here are some pictures of my latest, a red oak top and white oak bottom all lightly stained. I got a big plank of white oak that someone gave to me, 7 feet long, about 20 inches wide, 1 1/2" thick. It was warped right in the center but it was all quarter sawn wood which is beautiful. So I cut a 10 x 13 chunk and cut it up on my band saw to make the sides and bottom.

The top is a design I love, the claddagh, my own design in Aspire. I add the Celtic weave around it and the top edge has my chain design.

I like to share that I made a major goof on this top. I put the wrong date on it. This has always been my biggest carving fear, that I spell something wrong or get a date wrong. So it's not that you make mistakes, it's that you fix them so no one notices and make the fix look like part of the design.

Bill,

Nice box. I see how you covered up the mistake by carving a small pocket over the date. I'm I correct? I've done that mistake myself on 2 projects, so I know what you went thru.

Tony, you are correct. Originally the date was the same level as the name. So I wanted to make a pocket to follow the ellipse of the oval and not carve into the rest of the design. It's only about .080" deep. Unfortunately I didn't find the error until I had stained the top and rubbed on one coat of poly. So I am happy the way this blended in.

The top was fully cut on the Shark. The box joints on the sides were also cut on the shark. To see how to do that, search Hangover on the forum.

Excellent as I would expect. As far as the mistake, all of us do it, but its the end result that people see. That can be viewed as just one of those integral design techniques that add to the project more than it takes away. Even the stain issue might have looked nice to have an unstained portion if it had very clean lines. One of the hardest things to do and most people looking at it doesn't realize unless they have done it, is to get the work piece back in the right place and all the zeros correct for it to put the corrections in the right place instead of offset or crooked. Again, excellent execution which is why your work tends to be looked at as "the standard" that most people try to emulate, or at least I do.
