Walnut Humidor

Post by terryz854 »

Here's something I made for one of my friends for Christmas. Nothing original as far as artwork, but he sure likes it. Spanish Cedar lined of course.

Very nice! That Walnut has some crazy grain going on.

I too am in the middle of making a humidor, my first. Where did you get your Spanish Cedar, and which hygrometer and humidifier do you use? The all seem the same?

Thanks and good job!

Jimily, I went to a wood yard to get the Spanish cedar. I could have ordered it from Rockler but that wouldn't have been as much fun. I informed the recipient that the moisture meter will have to be his responsibility.

Our Dakota carries it too but that's dangerous, I always come back with more wood than I planned to get. Like a kid in a candy shop. And I will get 5 times the wood from going there than ordering it online in small pieces for the same price but it's an hour away. But then I can make a handful of humidors with all the extra! (See how the justification for going and buying lots of wood starts?! It gets me every time.)

Thanks! I suppose I need to go into town and go wood shopping and try to exercise restraint. And perhaps somebody over at Dakota will know some thing or two about humidors. I always get into talks about this or that while I'm there. Dam the wood pusher man!

Oh and as a final question what did you finish the walnut with? Any special decision because its a humidor?

Thanks again,
Jim

mchurchf, a humidor is where cigars are stored, to prevent them drying out too much.
Being retired is hard work. Spending way too much time in the shop these days. (And loving it).

Yep it's to keep them at proper moisture level so they don't crumble and fall apart and the Spanish cedar is to keep them safe from some tobacco worm that would eat the leaves. There is a humidifier in the box to provide the humidity, and a hygrometer to keep track of it.

My FIL is into cigars and so I am scooping up info on humidors by the arm full and am almost ready for another gift project to make.
