Firewood

Post by Bob »

Two years ago, a friend gave me some firewood for projects. I sliced the wood into 1" thick slabs, and let it dry. This project is an attempt to use the fluting toolpath for making a firewood bowl:

That worked out really well!

The cut closely matches the shape of the wood. How did you determine the perimeter prior to cutting?

Thank you Kayvon,
I have found it fastest to use the draw curve tool for an outline this easy. I also smoothed it out with the Bezier tool. I then offset the vector inward .5" to allow for the bowl sides and clamping.
I'm in the process of writing up the process for this Saturday's cnc group meeting. I'll post it when completed.

I suppose another option would be to scan the flat side of the wood on a computer scanner (actually intended to scan in papers) if you were worried about exact contours. I tried that once for scanning in a handwriting sample, then reproducing it on the bottom of a jewelry box using a V bit. It turned out quite well.

Yup, My go-to method is a flat bed scanner.

Step two in the firewood adventure.
Instead of using the fluting toolpath, I used the moulding toolpath combined with the pocketing toolpath:
