hd5 cutting only half the depth

just got a demo hd5 from rockler, where i work.
i but the material thickness at .75, and tell the cut to be .78 and it only cuts to .40!
the z axis and bit can reach the alum. bed to i know i have the travel. i have my cut material that is to be cut on a .75 waste board.
z is zeroed on my cut piece. i am using the correct processor because everything else is coming out correct except the depth of cut
what can i do to fix it?
