shark carved in foam

Post by jdonaldson »

I seem to remember a while back that Tim had carved a shark out of foam, I now have a grandson that's into sharks and thought that it would be a fun project

Hi John,

I think I may be the Tim you are referring to and if you are looking for more information these two links would be a good place to start:

It could be done in either Cut3D or Aspire with Aspire offering a few advantages - I'm not sure what you have for software. If you are using Aspire, there is a Slicing tutorial on the Aspire DVD where Vectric shows laying out and machining this in detail.

One lesson learned for me was my grandson was a little too young even though it was intended to hang on his wall and out of reach. Needless to say, the Great White has met his match :D

Tim,

Yes that's the project I was thinking about didn't remember it being so large and while I do have cut3d not sure my shark and I would be able to handle it.

Thanks for the quick response

Hi John,

You can resize it to whatever works for you. Most likely the length will be your limiting dimension, so set that first and let the width automatically adjust. Then you can either increase the Z height to give it a little more shape or adjust it to fit the material you want to use.

This is a different project, but I used the same Vector Art 3D model to create a two-sided bank that was about 20" long. As you can see by the outside shape, it mimics the larger one exactly:

Also, if you have VCarve Pro, you can make it larger in Cut3D, import the toolpaths into VCP and use the Tile Toolpath feature to machine it in segments. Just a thought.

Tim
