Engraving on Acryllic - Bits

Post by ssalvner »

I create a lot of Gavels and Sounding blocks out of resin (acryllic). I want to carve saying on the sounding blocks. What is the best bit for engraving? I suspect I'll have to fill in the letters with paint or colored resin in order to show properly. I JUST got my machine this week and I'm very new. I created a file with Have a nice day on it, saved as CNC Shark Arc in, but its not working ATM (I have posted to another thread on that one). I have a Freud 7.5 deg engraving bit, but I've seen more people sticking to the 60 or 90 deg v bit. Also, it appears that VCarve doesn't like to allow for filled letters when doing it on curve (FYI). HELP please.

If I were going to fill the acrylic with resin, I'd use a V-bit like you said. 90-degree is fine if the design is large enough. 60-degree will be deeper.

If you're not planning to fill them with resin, you can use a drag bit, instead. I experimented with that a little here:
