Great suggestions, Bob. I think the most likely culprit is a dull bit, but those other considerations are something I'll watch out for in the future Thanks.
How does one tell when a bit is getting dull before something this radical happens?

While forming a profile, the tool "bit" hard into the wood and veered off course. Any ideas what caused this? SD110 gantry extensions
I'd like to work on a thick block of wood (about 4"), but the Z movement is only about 3". I need to cut into the material only about 2.5" so the Z movement would be sufficient but I need to offset it upwards by about 3". I need and extension to the existing gantry or a new, taller gantry or a Vcarv...
