Hi, any suggestions on software for changing highly detailed color pictures into usable bmp files for Vcarve?

It depends what you want to do with the file in VCarve. Generally, I'll use GIMP (or any other photoshop-like program) to convert the photo to black & White or apply a line filter. Try messing around with the settings on GIMP's newspaper filter, for instance, then vcarving the result.

You can take the more user-friendly Skylum app https://skylum.com/photo-editor-for-beginners Easier than Photoshop or Gimp.

irfanview.com is another great free graphics program. I use it every day. It's batch features make it very powerful as well as being a very good graphics photo program.
