need help carving on a gun stock

I'm still new to this machine so any advice will help. The problem I'm having is figuring out how to carve on an irregular curved surface. The gun stock has a curve which I need to follow in order to wrap an engraving around. Do I have to build the stock in vcarve and then put the design on that? Can I set multiple 0 coordinates and have that rendered into v carve so I can use the router to draw the gun?
