Spindle For Shark Available

I have been evaluating cnc routers for months now trying to come to a decision on which one purchasing one. I finally called NWA yesterday and found out that a spindle is now available for the 60th anniversary model.

A 1.5 kilowatt spindle which roughly translates to 2.01 HP. The spindle is water cooled which requires a pump and tubing. NWA recommends using a 300 gal/hr pump that can be purchased from the home improvement store submerged in a bucket of water, but a chiller can also be used. The spindle, by itself, weighs 8.66 lbs. Price is about $800.

I just wanted to pass this on.

my two questions would be
1) is it a 120v or 220v spindle.
2) is it actually available or another mythical offering to be determined like the 4th axis?

4dthinker,

You have to call next wave to find out about it, not on website yet.

The spindle is on the NWA website now. Here's the link: http://shop.nextwaveautomation.com/shop ... itemid=147

Now if they would only get the 4th Axis on there......

Looks like the $799 price also includes the pump and whatever else you would need to get it working with your Shark. From their spec page:

"2hp (1.5Kw) liquid cooled brushless Spindle. 24,000 RPM max 110V 13 amp inverter with readout display
Er11 Collet system includes 1/4" and 1/8" shank collets
Coolant hoses and fittings Submergible 110V fluid pump for coolant.
Clamping kit for Spindle to CNC Shark Interface kit for connection to Shark controller"

I wonder if it permits passing on Spindle speed settings made in VCarve/Aspire/Cut2D/Cut3D through the controller.

I'll wait until I see a review before I think about it. Or at least until I wear
out this Porter Cable router.

Has anyone bought this new spindle for NWA? This seems a reasonable price but I am not sure about its performance or durability. It is a brushless motor so that is good. The next thing to go are the bearings or bushings, as the case may be. Bearings would be much better than bushings. The top speed of 24K seems a little light but maybe that's okay. It has a maximum shaft size of 1/4". I do use some bits with 1/2" shafts. Seems like anything this inexpensive must be coming from China. Most are of dubious merit. It is still tempting but I want to see some reviews before I shell out $800. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of information on the NWA site about this product. More information may help to reach a reasonable decision.

I have a couple of questions too.

1. Is there a speed controller? Or is it just on/off like the router interface?
2. The collet kit that it comes with includes 1/4" and 1/8" is there a 1/2" collet available? I do use 1/2" for planing and for faux raised panel bits.

Someone above asked if it was 110v or 220, it says that it is 110, so at least we don't have to rewire anything.

As with others, I too would be very interested in reading a review.

I can answer at least one of those questions. ER11 collets only go up to 1/4" (ER11 collets are 11mm at the face 11mm=.433").

I would also be curious if they are specing a TIR on it.
