Making first sign - Vbit settings

Post by Rut Row »

I have a HD520 with the 3hp spindle and use Vectric Pro 11.5. The wood is black cherry.

I'm making my very first sign and have questions about the proper settings for the bit. I'm using a Bits & Bits 425-VG45 and using B&B's tool database settings. They recommend a .04 pass depth. Reading online, I see many people using a depth of 0.125.

I know each bit setup is specific to each machine, wood, etc. But what is a good starting point?

For a V-bit, 1/8" is a fine starting point. You can go more or less aggressive as you fine tune things.

My rule of thumb for end mills on wood is 1/2 the end mill diameter. Again, you'll fine tune that for your situation, but that's my go-to value.
