I was using alot of dowels in my learning. I finally figured out that the Lathe Cut depth offset (in the preferences) could be a very handy little tool when you want to run a tap file and not do any cutting. My normal lathe depth setting took some trial and error to get it zeroed in. It ended up being 0.90 in.

So if I want to try a tap file without any cutting, I just set this value at 0.2 inches, run the file and get an idea that what I want to cut is happening in the correct place. If it looks correct, I reset the lathe depth setting back to 0.90 and run the job.
