antifreeze instead of water in spindle

Post by edwinwhitesel »

I am just setting up my new HD520 with the water cooled spindle. I was wondering if it would be ok to use something like windshield washer fluid instead of water to prevent freezing and damage to the spindle and/or hoses. My shop is not heated and I live in the northeast where nightime temps go below freezing.

RV antifreeze (not windshield washer fluid) is quite commonly used.
Water is actually a more-efficient heat conductor, but it boils and freezes.
And stuff grows in it. A couple drops of bleach every month prevents that.
I use antifreeze in mine. Spindles like to run in the 80-100F range, so
it's not necessary to keep the fluid "cold."

Hope that clarifies,
