Viking Long Boat

Post by Bob »

I seem to be going through my concentric ring bowl phase right now. This bowl is intended as a centerpiece. Since my wife has Norwegian ancestors, I thought a Viking Long Boat would be fun to try. It's good to be nice to her because her ancestors (Vikings) used to beat up on my ancestors (English).

The new version of the Longboat. I wanted it to look less like a scale model, and become more functional as a bowl.

Hi Bob,
While I would like to take credit for this idea, I can not...It's a spinoff from this idea: http://www.scrollerltd.com/prodinfo.asp?number=7957AC

Love the design. Anyway you can share your design with us? I have a fairly good idea how you did the ovals but how to do the end and side support pieces. Got a pattern. I'm assuming those were done on a scroll saw?

Made me think of a quote from the movie "Back to the Future", adapted to this business..... "Where we are going they don't need scroll saws" LOL

Bob, I may be getting a CNC machine soon. May I ask you you created this boat? I love it!

Mike,
If you can draw a picture using the vectric program (or any cad program), you can operate a Shark.

I copied a design that is intended for scrollsaw work.
I used the oval drawing tool to make the rings.
I traced a dragon head picture using VCarve.
Drawing the stepped parts to support the rings, I used standard drafting techniques to transfer dimensions from one part to another.
After the drawing was made, VCarve calculated the toolpaths. So, there is no need for you to learn code. When I demonstrate the Shark, this is the most common concern expressed by people.

As you have more specific needs, I, and a lot of Shark owners are here who will answer your questions. In addition you have Next Wave, and Rockler, providing excellent support.

Isvien,
I plan to post this file on Syttende Mai in order to celebrate Grunnlovsdagen. This is to celebrate my Wife's heritage.
